Armenian Monasteries: Kataro Monastery

It is found in the Hadrout region, on the Dizapait hill. The summit of the hill, where the monument is found is one of the main historical sanctuaries of Artsakh. Except the "Kataro Vank" church, there are adjacent constructions and ruins of barrier walls preserved here, which makes the sanctuary more important - the place of Pilgrimages for the Region. According to historical sources the hill is holy since the ancient times and the mentioning about pilgrimages relates back to the Arabian and even earlier times. The "Ziarat" name, which the foreigners used to call Dizapait, has the same sanctuary meaning.

The Church has a rectangular layout, with double slant roof (dimensions 11.7 x 6.7 m). It is a single-nave basilica built with half-processed limestone. The only entrance is from the west and the windows are on eastern and southern sides. According to the manuscript on the lintel, the holy temple refers to Hakob and according to the facts it was reconstructed in the XIX century. The original monument, concluding from the ruins of cross-stones (khachkars) preserved at the site, refers to XVII century. There is a construction adjacent to the church from the south (dimensions 9.8 x 3.8 m), to the lower hill slope of which ruins of several constructions are preserved.
